Spot de Klitmøller (Cold Hawaii)

Klitmøller (Cold Hawaii)

Klitmøller (Cold Hawaii)

Overview

Klitmøller, nicknamed "Cold Hawaii", is Denmark's most famous kitesurfing spot and one of Northern Europe's best wave spots. Located on the northwestern coast of Jutland, within Thy National Park, this spot offers an authentic North Sea experience with powerful waves and consistent winds.

The "Cold Hawaii" nickname was coined by windsurfing legend Josh Stone, referring to the exceptional wave quality despite the cold waters. The area extends between Hanstholm to the north and Vorupør to the south, with Klitmøller as the epicenter.

Conditions are demanding: powerful beach break waves, cold and clear waters (12-17°C even in summer). The spot is reserved for intermediate to expert riders looking for challenging sessions.

Parking

Several car parks available near the beach, including one accessible from Nystrup campsite. Public toilets with showers available nearby. A small toilet block is located directly at the spot.

Hazards

Watch out for the shallow reef - contact is possible after a wipeout. Wearing booties is strongly recommended. The area called the "Washing Machine" is particularly dangerous: walls of white water break almost perpetually, making recovery difficult. Water level over the reef can be very shallow in some points.

Wind specificities

Prevailing west and northwest winds, averaging 15 to 30 knots. The spot works best with WSW to NW winds. In SSW to SW winds, the sheltered bay isn't at its full potential: the mussel reef to the south then offers the best cross-shore conditions on big, powerful waves.
