Falassarna (Phalasarna) is a magnificent beach on the northwest coast of Crete, near Kissamos. This wide sand beach facing west is one of the island's most beautiful, with turquoise waters and spectacular sunsets.
The Meltemi arrives from NW/NNW as side-onshore on this west-facing coast. Conditions are fairly reliable in summer and the wide beach space facilitates launching. A good intermediate spot for western Crete.
Launching from the wide sand beach – plenty of space. Extended sailing area towards open water. Side-onshore wind is ideal for sailing. No permanent kite school but lessons may be offered in season.
Works from June to September. The beach is touristic but large enough to coexist with swimmers.
Open water with chop and waves formed by the NW wind. Full west exposure means swell can enter directly. Sandy bottom. Progressive depth. Magnificent turquoise water.
Good wave-riding conditions on sustained Meltemi days.
Intermediate
Open all year round
Large dirt parking behind the beach. Access from the Kissamos-Falassarna road (well signposted). A few tavernas and a beach canteen in season. Kissamos is 15km away for full services.
Coastal current possible in sustained wind. Swell can make launching and return difficult. Rocks at bay ends. Tourist beach – respect swimming zones. No permanent supervision.
Meltemi arrives from NW/NNW as side-onshore to side-shore on this west coast. Typical strength 15-25 knots in summer. The direct northwest exposure allows capturing the Meltemi more efficiently than southwest coast spots.
Consistent wind in the afternoon. Possible thermal reinforcement. Good reliability from June to September, similar to the north coast.
