Spot de Flag Beach

Flag Beach

Flag Beach

Overview

Flag Beach is the most popular kitesurf spot in the north of Fuerteventura and one of the island's most iconic riding locations. It's a long, sandy beach within the Corralejo Dunes Natural Park, directly facing the island of Lobos which provides some protection from northern swells.

The spot offers side-shore wind from the prevailing NE trades, with conditions ranging from flat to small waves depending on swell and wind strength. The beach is spacious with easy access, making it suitable for all levels from beginners (with school supervision) to advanced riders boosting off wind-generated waves.

Flag Beach is just 5 minutes by car from Corralejo, the main tourist town in northern Fuerteventura with a vibrant nightlife, restaurants, and accommodation. A kite centre on the beach offers lessons, rental, and rescue services.

During peak season (May–September), expect 15–20+ knots most days. In winter, swell can bring bigger waves and more challenging conditions.

Local association recommendations

FlagBeach Kite Centre — lessons, rental, rescue. FuerteActive — boat-supported lessons from Corralejo.

Spot functioning

Launch from the spacious sandy beach. Conditions range from flat water to small-medium waves depending on swell direction and wind strength.

Freeride/Freestyle: the main area offers choppy to flat water in the centre.

Waves: when strong NE wind or NW swell arrives, waves develop — great kickers for jumping.

Beginners: schools operate with boat support, bringing students to the best conditions. Downwind service available.

Lobos island creates a partial shelter from northern swells, keeping conditions manageable most days.

On the water

Mix of flat, chop and small waves (0.5–1.5m typical). Sandy bottom with scattered volcanic rocks at low tide.

Water temperature 18–23°C year-round. 3/2mm wetsuit or shorty recommended.

Parking

Flag Beach is within the Corralejo Dunes Natural Park, about 5 min drive south of Corralejo. Park along the main road (FV-1) — no dedicated parking, but plenty of space along the roadside.

Walk 50m over the dunes to reach the beach and the kite school/centre.

Corralejo is served by buses from Puerto del Rosario airport (~40 min). Car rental highly recommended (~€100/week).

Hazards

Rocks at low tide: volcanic rocks become exposed at low tide, especially at the edges of the beach. Very sharp — reef shoes recommended.

Crowded: during peak season, Flag Beach gets busy with kiters, windsurfers, and bathers. Watch your lines.

Wind gusts: when wind shifts more northerly, it can become gusty due to the tourist resorts behind the beach creating turbulence.

Currents: moderate currents possible, especially with strong wind and swell.

Wind specificities

The prevailing NE trade wind blows side-shore at Flag Beach. Works best with easterly winds — the more north the wind turns, the more gusty it becomes due to the resorts behind the beach.

Wind strength: 15–20 knots typical in season, can reach 25+. Kite sizes 9–12m typical. Best season May to September for consistent wind.

In winter (Oct–Mar), wind is less reliable but NW swells bring proper waves.
