Focene is the most popular kitesurf spot in the Rome area. Located between Fiumicino airport and the beach, this spot offers a long volcanic black sand coastline. The dominant wind is the Ponente (west) and the Libeccio (southwest) which blow onshore to cross-shore on this west-facing coast. It is the reference spot for Roman kiters, with several schools and an active club. The proximity to Fiumicino airport (5 min) and Rome (30 min) makes it a very accessible spot.
Open all year round
Intermediate
Free parking along the road leading to the beach. Access from Fiumicino direction Focene. In summer, spots can be limited on weekends.
The Ponente (W) and the Libeccio (SW) are the main winds, blowing onshore to cross-shore. The Maestrale (NW) is cross-onshore and brings good conditions. The sea thermal breeze (Ponente) often sets in during summer afternoons. The Ostro (S) and the Scirocco (SE) are offshore and less interesting.
Proximity to Fiumicino airport: respect any kite height restrictions. Coastal current in strong wind. Swimming zone to be respected in summer. Progressive sandy bottom.
