Lake Koocanusa is a massive 145km-long reservoir in northwestern Montana, created by the Libby Dam on the Kootenai River. The frozen lake offers an exceptional snowkite surface at 746m altitude, framed by the Cabinet and Purcell Mountains. Wild and grand landscape near the Canadian border.

Hazards

Grizzly bears present in the area. Severe hypothermia — very cold northwestern Montana climate. Unstable ice near the dam and inflows. Sudden blizzards descending from mountains. Extreme isolation on this immense lake. Poor cell coverage.

Immense frozen surface in winter — one of Montana's largest snowkite spaces. Solid ice from December to March. Drifts and wind-blown snow in exposed sections. Winds channeled by mountain valleys.
