Snowkite spot on Canyon Ferry Lake at Hellgate Campground, near Helena. Canyon Ferry is central Montana's main reservoir at 1,155m and the state's snowkite hub. Vast frozen surface with valley winds channeled between the Big Belt and Elkhorn Mountains.

Unstable ice near inflows and the dam. Hypothermia — winter temperatures can drop below -30°C with wind chill. Sudden blizzards descending from mountains. Valley winds with unpredictable gusts. Isolation on the frozen surface.
Large frozen surface from December to March. Generally solid ice on the main lake body. Drifts and bare ice alternate with wind patterns. Excellent riding space on this large reservoir.
