Snowkite spot on the Aubrac plateau (Lozère/Aveyron border) near the Col de Bonnecombe, at 1,395 m altitude. The Chalet de la Source is a reference access point on this vast high plateau — one of the finest snowkite destinations in the Massif Central, with wide open fields and panoramic views. The Aubrac plateau offers unlimited space, ideal for multi-kilometre cross-country runs. Requires a minimum of 100 cm snow depth. Conditions information: Lozère Tourism and Loz'Air association (lozair.com).
Freeride (Ski touring access)
1395m
Open all year round
Vast and exposed plateau — rapid weather changes and sudden fog possible. Wind can be highly variable in mountain terrain. Do not go alone: a helper for launch is strongly recommended, and getting lost on the open plateau is a real risk in poor visibility. Wear a helmet, adequate ski/snowboard equipment, and a safety leash. Check conditions before heading out.
North and North-North-West are the most productive directions on the Aubrac plateau — the wind rolls cleanly across the open fields. South is also frequent but tends to be gustier. West is possible but less common. 10–15 knots are ideal conditions for snowkite; above 20 knots is strongly discouraged in mountain terrain.
