Roatan is the main kitesurfing destination in Honduras' Bay Islands. The best spots are on the east end of the island, thanks to the favorable orientation relative to the prevailing easterly trade winds. The barrier reef to the north protects the water and creates varied conditions.
The best season runs from February to August, with Caribbean trade winds of 15-30 knots in the afternoon and 12-20 knots in the morning. Peak wind is in April-May with 20+ knots almost every day. The trades only stop during hurricane season (September) and rainy season (October-November).
Water temperature is 25-29°C year-round. Several kite schools operate on the island, mainly at Camp Bay and Paya Bay.
Open all year round
