Rawai Beach is Phuket's winter season kitesurfing spot, located on the southeast coast of the island in Chalong Bay. Unlike Nai Yang which works during the SW monsoon, Rawai comes alive from November to March when the NE monsoon brings thermal winds to this sheltered bay. The spot is not a traditional swimming beach, which actually benefits kitesurfers as there are fewer tourists in the water.
The bay offers flat to slightly choppy water conditions with thermal winds that are typically best in the mornings. At low tide, a shallow lagoon forms that gives beginners a safe area to practice without drifting into deeper water. The flat water conditions make Rawai excellent for freestyle and foiling. Wind strength is generally moderate at 12-18 knots on average.
Rawai has a strong local kite community and several schools operating during the NE season. The area is one of Phuket's most popular expat neighborhoods, with excellent seafood restaurants along the beachfront and easy access to the rest of the island.
