Puttalam Lagoon is a large lagoon on the east side of the Kalpitiya peninsula in North Western Province. The lagoon stretches for many kilometers, offering vast flat water riding areas. The SW monsoon from May to October blows across the lagoon.
A beginner to intermediate flat water spot. The lagoon is shallow with a sandy to muddy bottom. No waves and no tidal influence. The large size means plenty of space even during busy periods. Wind can be slightly reduced inside the lagoon compared to the ocean side. Some areas have shallow sandbars. Watch for fishing stakes and nets in the lagoon.
