Cloud 9 on Siargao Island is legendary in the surfing world, renowned for its powerful reef break that produces some of the best barrels in Southeast Asia. For kitesurfers, Cloud 9 and its surrounding waters offer an extraordinary wave-riding experience during the Amihan monsoon season. Located on the eastern coast of Siargao in the Caraga region, this spot faces the open Pacific Ocean, receiving both consistent wind and swell.
The northeast monsoon (Amihan) from November to May delivers reliable winds of 15-25 knots, combined with Pacific swells that create world-class wave riding conditions. The Cloud 9 reef break itself is primarily a surfing wave, but the adjacent waters and nearby spots provide excellent kite wave-riding opportunities. The wind direction during Amihan is cross to cross-onshore, ideal for kite wave sessions.
This is an expert-level spot due to the shallow reef, powerful waves, and strong currents. The reef is sharp coral and injuries can be serious if you don't respect the conditions. Riders should have significant wave riding experience and be comfortable in overhead surf. The currents around the reef can be strong, particularly during tidal changes, and rescue can be difficult in the wave zone.
Despite the challenging conditions, Cloud 9 rewards experienced kiters with unforgettable sessions in warm tropical waters against a backdrop of pristine jungle coastline. The area around General Luna offers plenty of accommodation, from budget hostels to boutique resorts. The kite community on Siargao is growing, and you'll find like-minded riders eager to share knowledge about local conditions and the best spots to ride around the island.
