Omaezaki is one of the most renowned kitesurfing and windsurfing spots in Japan, located on Cape Omaezaki in Shizuoka Prefecture. This rocky headland jutting into the Pacific Ocean creates exceptional wind conditions that have made the site famous among Japanese and international riders. The cape marks the boundary between Suruga Bay to the east and the Enshu coast to the west, offering remarkable wind exposure over nearly 270 degrees. Wind conditions at Omaezaki are among the most consistent in Japan. In summer, southwest thermal breezes blow regularly between 15 and 25 knots, fueled by the thermal differential between the Pacific Ocean and the land. In winter, northeast winds associated with low-pressure systems can be very powerful, sometimes exceeding 30 knots, offering challenging sessions for experienced riders. The spot is rideable practically year-round thanks to this dual exposure. The main sailing area is on the beach south of the cape, with a sandy bottom and waves that can reach 2 meters during strong Pacific swells. The body of water is quite open and currents can be strong around the cape, requiring good technical skills. Several national windsurfing and kitesurfing competitions are held here each year, reflecting the consistently high quality of conditions. Omaezaki is easily accessible from Tokyo (approximately 3 hours by car via the Tomei Expressway). The spot has parking, showers, and a few local schools. The town of Omaezaki also offers accommodations and renowned seafood restaurants, particularly for tuna and Suruga shrimp.
