Overview

Morjim Beach is widely considered the best kitesurfing spot in Goa, located on India's western coast in North Goa at the mouth of the Chapora River. Known locally as "Turtle Beach" due to the Olive Ridley sea turtles that nest here, Morjim offers a perfect combination of consistent wind, flat water, and beautiful tropical scenery. The beach stretches for nearly 3 kilometers, providing ample space for kitesurfers of all levels.

The monsoon season from May to September brings the best kitesurfing conditions, with strong northwest to westerly winds blowing consistently at 15-25 knots. The river mouth at the southern end of the beach creates a natural lagoon area with butter-flat water, ideal for beginners and freestyle riders. The wind is cross-onshore from the northwest, which is the safest direction as it brings riders back to shore. During peak monsoon months (June-August), the wind can be very strong and gusty, occasionally exceeding 30 knots.

What makes Morjim special is the diversity of riding conditions within a short distance. The river mouth lagoon provides flat water for learning and freestyle, while the open ocean section offers small to medium waves for wave riding. The sandy bottom throughout the beach is forgiving, and the water depth increases gradually, allowing riders to walk out to waist-deep water before launching. At low tide, extensive sandbars are exposed, creating additional flat water pools.

Morjim has developed into Goa's kite center, with several reputable kite schools and rental shops operating along the beach. The village retains a more relaxed, less commercialized feel compared to other Goa beach towns, with excellent seafood restaurants and laid-back beach shacks. Accommodation ranges from simple guesthouses to boutique hotels. The spot is a seasonal destination, as October to April brings the dry northeast monsoon with offshore winds unsuitable for this west-facing coast.
