Spot de Öland Grönhögen

Öland Grönhögen

Öland Grönhögen

Overview

Grönhögen is a kitesurfing spot located at the southern tip of Öland island, in Kalmar County. This spot is one of the most renowned on Öland thanks to its exposed position at the island's southern extremity, where Baltic winds blow with great consistency. The southern tip of Öland is a particularly windy location, exposed to winds from multiple directions. The body of water varies depending on wind direction: the west side in the Kalmarsund for westerly winds, the east side facing the open Baltic for easterly winds. Conditions can be challenging in strong winds with currents around the point. Grönhögen is a historic village known for its limestone quarries and lighthouse. The spot attracts kitesurfers from all over Sweden, especially in summer when Öland becomes a major tourist destination. The natural setting of the Alvaret, the great limestone heath listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, adds to the charm of the location. The spot is suitable for intermediate and advanced riders. The best season runs from May to October, but sessions are possible year-round in favorable conditions.
