Playa del Trabucador is one of the most beautiful kite spots in Spain and one of only 3 official zones in Catalunya — kite allowed year-round without restriction. A stunning 6.5 km wild sand spit in the Delta de l'Ebre Natural Park, UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The spit separates the Mediterranean from the enormous Alfacs lagoon (7 km long, 3 km wide) — flat water one side, open sea the other. The lagoon is consistently shallow enough to stand for the first 50-100m, making it one of the safest and easiest spots to learn in all of Spain. 2h drive from Barcelona, 1h from Reus-Tarragona airport. Flamingos, rice paddies, bird watching, cycling — the delta is a paradise beyond kite. Incredible seafood (rice dishes, langoustines) in nearby Sant Carles de la Ràpita.
Spirit Kite School — On site at Trabucador. Courses and rentals.
La Central del Kite — On site. Courses and rentals.

Year-round, no restrictions.
Spring/Summer (April-July): BEST SEASON. Garbí thermal S→SW, picks up ~13h, 12-20 knots. Strongest thermal in the region — the flat delta amplifies it. Kites 10-15m (75kg).
Autumn/Winter: Mestral NW, strong and gusty (can reach 30-50 kts). Kites 6-9m. Also Llevant E — onshore on ocean side, chaotic waves.
Lagoon: Flat water always. Shallow, you can stand. Schools on the right side of the jetty, experienced riders to the left. Deep enough for windsurf fins on the left.
Ocean side: Waves, bigger launching area. Levante E creates onshore waves here.
Lagoon: Flat water, shallow (you can stand 50-100m out). Sandy bottom. Warm in summer — no wetsuit needed. Stinging algae and weevers present — wear lycra + booties. Perfect for freestyle, beginners, freeride.
Ocean: Small to medium Mediterranean waves. Sandy. Choppy with Llevant.
Water temp: 22-26°C summer (no wetsuit lagoon), 13-16°C winter (5/4mm recommended Oct-May). Air 8-35°C.

Open all year round
Sandy car park at the start of the spit. Free. Or drive further along the spit and park wherever you like to escape the crowds. ⚠️ Beware: strong winds + high tides can flood the spit — don't park too low! Nearest town: Sant Carles de la Ràpita (~15 min). Campsites: Camping La Tancada (simple, economic, close — bring mosquito repellent!). Accommodation in Sant Carles de la Ràpita — economic area.
⚠️ Stinging algae hidden among normal algae in the lagoon — wear a lycra and/or leggings to avoid being stung.
⚠️ Greater weevers (vives) buried in the shore sand — wear booties!
⚠️ No rescue service — be self-sufficient.
⚠️ Strong winds + high tides can FLOOD the entire spit — beware, your car too!
⚠️ Electric powerlines along the ocean side beach — hazard for kiters, especially with onshore Llevant wind.
⚠️ Launching area on lagoon side is limited — wrap your lines when kite is on sand.
⚠️ No services on the spit outside summer (no water, no shade, no toilets). Beach bar only in summer.
⚠️ Mosquitos can be fierce near marshes — bring repellent if camping nearby (Camping La Tancada).
Garbí (S→SW thermal) — BEST WIND. April-July. Starts ~13h from the south, veers southwest. 12-20 knots, side-onshore on the lagoon. Strongest thermal in the region — flat delta amplifies it. Kites 10-15m (75kg).
Mestral (NW) — Autumn/winter/spring. Strong 15-50 knots, gusty (comes from mountains). Directly onshore on the lagoon. Kites 6-9m. Powerful conditions, experienced riders.
Llevant (E) — Onshore on ocean side, chaotic waves. ⚠️ Power lines along beach become hazardous. Lagoon sheltered from this direction.
N (Tramuntana) — Winter. Strong. Better at Riumar (18 km north) where it's cross-shore.
