Overview

Veluwemeer / Riviera (Strand Horst, Wolderwijd) is one of the most popular kitesurfing spots in the Netherlands, located near Ermelo and Harderwijk on the Wolderwijd — the narrow western arm of the Veluwemeer. A 160-hectare recreation area with 3 kite beaches, 3 windsurf beaches, huge parking, full facilities and Telstar Surf directly on site.

The Wolderwijd offers a massive 1.5km × 5km expanse of shallow flat water — standing depth almost everywhere, perfect conditions for beginners, freestylers and freeriders. 180° wide wind range. In wind from NE/E: use Flevostrand across the lake (N302 bridge). Official kite zone south of the windsurf area, marked by yellow buoys. Kite launch must be done from the water (drag-launch). Seagrass fin recommended in summer for windsurfing.

Local association recommendations

Telstar Surf (large kitesurf shop + IKO school directly at Strand Horst) — www.telstarsurf.com. Strand Horst recreation area (marina, catering, golf, facilities) — www.strandhorst.nl. Free entry to the recreation area year-round sunrise to sunset.

Spot functioning

Official kite zone: south section of Strand Horst beach, marked by yellow buoys. Launch by drag-launch from the water (trees too close to shore for land launch). Windsurf zone: north beach section. Full facilities at Strand Horst: parking (paid, directly at water), showers, toilets, restaurant, marina, Telstar Surf shop + IKO school, hostel. Access from A28 motorway, exit Strand Horst. For NE/E wind: cross the Veluwemeer on N302 to Flevostrand on the Flevoland shore (easterly works there).

On the water

Wolderwijd: freshwater lake, standing depth almost everywhere (1–1.5m throughout the 5km kite area), flat to very slightly choppy. No tides, no waves, no current. In strong SW/W wind: light chop develops but never breaking. Perfect for freestyle, freeride, foiling and learning. In summer: seagrass on the bottom — use seagrass fin for windsurfing. Water temperature warmer than North Sea in spring (adapts quickly to air temperature). Shipping lane immediately offshore — deeper water there.

Parking

Paid parking directly at the water at Strand Horst. Large car park — easy access for campervans. GPS: Strand Horst, Ermelo (near Harderwijk). Exit A28 motorway. Facilities: showers, toilets, restaurant, Telstar Surf shop and school.

Hazards

Spot surrounded by trees near shore — kite drag-launch from water obligatory (launching on land prohibited). Respect yellow buoys marking the official kite zone. Windsurfers on north beach section — maintain clear separation. In seagrass season (summer): use seagrass fin for windsurf. Wind can be gusty from all directions as wind comes over land — use slightly larger kite than expected. Boat traffic in shipping lane immediately offshore — stay aware. Nature reserve rules apply — check signage at Telstar Surf.

Wind specificities

180° wind range: SW/W/NW/N/NE all work onshore or cross-shore. E wind: offshore at Strand Horst — cross the lake to Flevostrand. All winds come over land — can be gusty, especially from SW/W. North wind: most stable and non-gusty. Best months: April–August. Wind speed: typically 10–25 knots in good season. Inland location = less wind than the coast, but reliable in spring/autumn frontal systems.
