Scheveningen is the city beach of The Hague (Den Haag) — the most vibrant and famous kitesurf spot in the Netherlands. North Sea beach with punchy waves, stunning boulevard scenery, and a reputation as the meeting point of the Dutch kite community. High chance of spotting pro riders.
Three kite zones:
Live wind data from the Zwartpad station (Jumpteam). Best seasons: March–May and September–December. Summer is popular but very crowded.
Jumpteam Den Haag (NKV kite club — manages Noorderstrand kite zone, spot info and safety) — www.jumpteamdenhaag.nl. Kiteboardschool.nl (IKO school — lessons at Zwartpad north point and Zuiderstrand). Kitesurfspot.nl (school at Kijkduin and Scheveningen Zuiderstrand). Live wind data: Zwartpad weather station (monitored by Jumpteam).
North Sea — medium waves, choppy depending on wind. No standing area, water deep from shore. Large tidal range (up to 2m). Strong currents especially at Zuiderstrand and near the harbour head. Best wave conditions: SW/W/NW. Cold year-round: 3/2mm summer, 5/4mm + boots winter. Highly variable conditions — check forecast and tide before each session.
Advanced
Open all year round
Paid parking at Scheveningen (various car parks). Northerstrand: navigate to Jumpteam Den Haag or Zwartpad. Zuiderstrand: navigate to 'strandpaviljoen de Zilvermeeuw'. Boulevard parking limited in summer — arrive early or use the large P+R facilities near the tram stop (tram 11 from Den Haag Centraal direct to beach).
⚠️ Advanced spot only — waves, currents and crowd require solid kite control. Currents near the harbour head. Waves up to 3m in strong wind. Zone 1 (surf zone near harbour head) strictly off-limits for kiters. No kite lessons allowed on Noorderstrand — lessons only at Zwartpad north point or Zuiderstrand. Busy in summer, respect zones. Large tidal range. Groynes (breakwaters) in the water. W direct = strongly onshore, good upwind skills required. Wetsuit required year-round.
SW/W/NW/N/NE all work onshore or cross-shore. SW is dominant (strongest in autumn/winter). NE: good cross-shore conditions. Wind measured live at Zwartpad station (Jumpteam website). Summer: typically 12–20 knots, ideal conditions. Best months: March–May and September–December. In storm conditions (30+ knots): Zuiderstrand preferred (less exposed). Year-round rideable for dedicated wetsuit wearers.
