IJmuiden Zone 1 (Zuidpier beach, gemeente Velsen) is the main year-round kitespot at IJmuiden South Pier. The pier creates a natural wave current ideal for wind sports and slightly reduces currents close to shore. The beach gently slopes into the sea, allowing kitesurfers to stand in the water for a considerable distance — good for beginners with NW wind.
Zone 1: open year-round. A 40m strip above the tideline is always reserved for walkers. Yellow flags mark the kite launch/landing zone. Beach pavilions: Paviljoen Noordzee, Zilt aan Zee, Zuidpier, Makai Beach. Parking at KNRM IJmuiden (winter weekdays: first 30 min free, then €0.60/30 min, max €10/24h).

Zone 3 (IJmuiderslag): park at top of steep access road — long walk down to beach (~300m). Summer: max 2h free or pay again every 2h. Zone 1 (Zuidpier): large parking lot. GPS IJmuiderslag: IJmuiderslag beach, IJmuiden. GPS Zuidpier: Zuidpier, IJmuiden. Access from A9/A22, follow signs to IJmuiden then beach.
Intermediate
North Sea — choppy to light waves. Zone 1 (Zuidpier): shallow up to 100m, ideal beginners/foiling. Zone 3 (IJmuiderslag): currents stronger offshore. Large tidal range. Cold: 3/2mm summer, 5/4mm winter.
Large car park near KNRM IJmuiden beach entrance. Winter weekdays: first 30 min free, then €0.60/30 min, max €10/24h. Summer: busy — arrive early or use IJmuiderslag parking.
SW/W/NW/N/NE onshore. SW dominant. Consistent sea breeze. Year-round. Best Oct–Mar (strongest wind). Zone 1 more sheltered near pier. Zone 3 more exposed. 30 min from Amsterdam — perfect after-work session spot.
Strip of 40m above the tideline free for walkers at all times. Swimmers have absolute priority. Currents from the South Pier — increase with tidal flow. Waves can be choppy to medium. In summer, busy with day visitors — arrive early or go to IJmuiderslag.
