Brouwersdam is the Mecca of kitesurfing in the Netherlands — the country's absolute reference spot. The 6.5km dam connects Goeree-Overflakkee to Schouwen-Duiveland, separating the North Sea from the Grevelingenmeer. Massive sandy beach, consistent winds, 300m of shallow standing depth — everything combined for all levels, from first-time beginners to advanced freeriders.
At low tide: flat shallow water, ideal for lessons and beginners. At high tide: water rises onto the beach creating a perfect 10–20cm flat water lagoon for 2–3h (rare but exceptional). Short, soft waves daily (max 1m, non-breaking). In strong NW winds, surfable waves appear on the south side. Kite buggies and land boards on the wide beach. Always buzzing with a permanent kite community. Over 50% of days are windy every month.
⚠️ Kite zone: SOUTH side only — marked by yellow buoys. Beach passages numbered 14–17. Avoid German public holiday weekends in July–August: overcrowded from sunrise on windy days. Offshore wind = dangerous except for expert riders.
Natural High (kiteschool + surf shop + beachclub, directly on the spot, VDWS certified) — www.natural-high.nl. KBC Brouwersdam (kiteschool + F-ONE wingfoil rental, IKO certified) — www.kiteboarding-club.com. Kitesurfcentrum Brouwersdam. Beware Beach. Beyond the Horizon (private IKO school). Vertigo Sports (main school in Vrouwenpolder, mobile base at Brouwersdam). Kitesurfschool Zeeland (also operates at Brouwersdam).
Official kite zone is on the south side only, from Natural High station to the "De Kou" south beach pavilion. Yellow buoys mark the outer boundary of the permitted zone in the water. Beach passages are numbered 14–17.
Three distinct launch zones: (1) Main spot in the middle of the dam = official kite zone; (2) North end of the main beach = windsurfing only; (3) North end of the dam: a sheltered bay between high dunes where kiting is tolerated (not official). Foilers: launch from the right (north) side of the main beach. Land kite, buggy and land boarding allowed on the wide beach. North Sea with no strong current (the Grevelingenmeer bay blocks dominant currents — a major advantage over other NL/BE spots). At low tide: shallow flat water for 300m, excellent for learning. Short soft waves 0.5–1m in normal conditions. At high tide: slight shore break, harder for beginners. In strong W/NW wind: 1–1.5m waves on the south side, dynamic riding. Sandbanks ~5km offshore absorb North Sea swell. Salt water, temperature 10°C in April, 18–20°C in July–August.

Open all year round
Large free parking along the dam (dam side and beach side). Accessible for campervans. GPS: Brouwersdam 18, Ouddorp, or Brouwersdam 2, Scharendijke. Accessible by bus from Rotterdam. Showers, changing rooms and lockers at Natural High (free for surf club members).
⚠️ Offshore wind = dangerous except for expert riders. South kite zone only — respect yellow buoys. Shells in water and on beach (bare feet not recommended). At high spring tide, beach shrinks — don't leave gear on low sand. Very crowded May to September: constant situational awareness essential. Kite buggies and land boards active on beach — caution when launching/landing.
Dominant wind: SW, W, NW, N, NE — all these directions are onshore or side-onshore from the main beach. S to SE directions are offshore — avoid except expert riders. North Sea wind is generally steady and non-gusty due to absence of obstacles. In strong wind (>25kt), short energetic chop. The site records the most sunshine hours in the Netherlands. Wind year-round: main season April–October, winter sessions possible in thick 5/4mm suit.
