Vouliagmeni is an iconic spot on the Athenian Riviera, on the south coast of Attica in an upscale beach area between Kavouri and Varkiza. Vouliagmeni Bay is partially protected by surrounding rocky capes, offering quality water for kitesurfing and wingfoil.
The spot benefits from the "Embatis" thermal sea breeze from S/SSW, typical of the entire south coast of Athens. Vouliagmeni is one of the most renowned spots on the Athenian Riviera, with an active rider community and several sailing clubs nearby.
Typical sessions from 2 PM to 7 PM with the thermal. Several sailing clubs in the area offer equipment storage and lessons. The partially protected bay offers a good compromise between wind and manageable water. Also popular for wingfoil and paddle on light wind days.
Open all year round
Intermediate
Semi-protected water of Vouliagmeni Bay. Small chop in moderate thermal, flat conditions in light wind. Sandy bottom in the bay, rocky on the sides. Water among the clearest on the Athenian coast thanks to the bay's depth. Temperature: 23-27°C in summer. Lake Vouliagmeni (thermal spring) is nearby but not navigable.
Parking along the coastal avenue and in Vouliagmeni public car parks. Very upscale residential area — regulated, paid parking. Accessible by bus from central Athens. Sailing and beach clubs with private parking. In high season (July-August), parking is extremely difficult on weekends.
Dominant S/SSW "Embatis" thermal breeze in summer, starting around 1 PM and peaking at 14-20 knots between 4 and 7 PM. Vouliagmeni Bay can concentrate wind thanks to its amphitheater-like geography, sometimes offering slightly stronger conditions than neighboring beaches.
During Meltemi, NE wind can wrap around Mount Hymettus and reach the coast as side-offshore. On strong Meltemi days, the S thermal and NE Meltemi can interact, creating unstable and changing conditions.
Rocks on the capes on each side of the bay. Pleasure boat and yacht traffic (marina nearby). Many swimmers in summer in this popular beach resort. Marked swimming zones to respect. With NE wind, side-offshore conditions — do not sail if you're a beginner.
