Kedros Beach is a spot on Samos's north coast, in the Kokkari area, one of the most renowned windsurf/kitesurf zones in the Aegean Sea. Samos's north coast receives the full Meltemi, channeled and accelerated through the strait between Samos and Ikaria island to the north. The beach offers direct water access with onshore to side-onshore wind from N/NNW.
Rideable May to September, optimal July-August. The Meltemi picks up late morning and blows all afternoon. Launch directly from the beach. Wave and chop conditions on the exposed north coast. Windsurf/kitesurf centers in the Kokkari area. Plan for 7-12m² kites.
Water exposed to Meltemi with waves and chop. Waves build in the strait with moderate fetch. Pebble and sand bottom. Waves 0.5-1.5m in normal conditions, bigger in strong Meltemi. Crystal-clear water.
Intermediate
Open all year round
Parking along Samos's north coastal road. Paved access from Kokkari or Vathy. Beach-side parking possible.
In strong Meltemi (+25 knots), advanced conditions with significant waves and chop. Rocks and pebbles on some beaches. Coastal currents in the strait. Tourist boats and ferries. Don't ride too far offshore into the strait.
The Meltemi (N/NNE) channels between Samos and Ikaria, creating a powerful Venturi effect. Wind is accelerated 20-30% compared to synoptic wind. On the north coast, it arrives onshore to side-onshore from N/NNW, consistent 15-25 knots June to September with peaks to 30+. The Samos-Ikaria strait is one of the most powerful wind corridors in the Aegean. Wind is sustained and steady with little variation.
