Apolakkia is a spot in the southwest of Rhodes, near the village of the same name. Apolakkia bay faces southwest and receives the NW Meltemi after it has traveled along the island's west coast. The spot is isolated and uncrowded, in a rural and wild setting typical of southern Rhodes. The beach is mixed sand/pebble. It's an alternative spot for riders exploring the south of the island, to be combined with a visit to nearby Prasonisi.
Apolakkia works with the NW/W Meltemi side-onshore. Open riding area. Isolated spot with no nautical infrastructure. Total self-sufficiency required. Can be combined with Prasonisi (15 min drive). Intermediate conditions.
Aegean Sea SW coast, 22-26°C in summer. 2mm shorty. Sand/pebble/rock bottom. Moderate to strong chop depending on wind. Current possible along the coast.
Intermediate
Open all year round
Limited parking by the road or track to the bay. Access via secondary roads from Apolakkia village. Unimproved ground. Car essential — about 1h30 from Rhodes Town.
Very isolated spot with no rescue — never sail alone. Rocky bottom in some areas. Coastal current. Wind conditions less documented — use caution. Strong sun exposure. No water or supplies on site.
The NW Meltemi travels along the west coast of Rhodes and arrives at Apolakkia side-onshore to onshore (NW/W/WNW). The southwest-facing bay receives well the wind that has traveled the island's full length. 15-25 knots in summer. Wind potentially reinforced by channeling between surrounding hills. Conditions less documented than northern spots — check on site.
