Pounta is a spot at the extreme southeast of the Peloponnese, in Laconia, facing the passage to Elafonisos island. This strategic spot sits in the strait between the Peloponnese and Elafonisos, benefiting from a Venturi effect that accelerates winds through this narrow passage.
Pounta is the gateway to the legendary Elafonisos spots (Simos, Sarakiniko) with their white sand beaches and Caribbean-like turquoise waters. The strait creates unique wind conditions, rideable with NE wind (Meltemi) or SW (depressions).
The spot works with NE wind (Meltemi, summer) and SW (depressions, spring/autumn). The Venturi effect in the strait guarantees wind even on light wind days offshore. The crossing to Elafonisos provides access to the Simos and Sarakiniko spots for turquoise flat water.
Strong current in the strait, creating choppy water. In Meltemi, short irregular chop due to currents. Sandy bottom. Exceptional crystal-clear turquoise water (one of the most beautiful in Greece). Temperature: 21-25°C in summer.

Parking at Pounta port (Elafonisos ferry dock). Ferry operates frequently (10-min crossing). Some tavernas and accommodation in Pounta. Neapoli 10 min away for services. Access from Sparta (1.5h) or Monemvasia (45 min).
Strong currents in the Pounta-Elafonisos strait. Frequent ferry traffic — STAY CLEAR of the ferry route! Wind can shift direction in the strait depending on currents. In strong Meltemi (>20 knots) combined with currents, very demanding conditions.
Dual wind regime thanks to the Pounta-Elafonisos strait: the N/NNE Meltemi arrives channeled and accelerated through the strait, and SW winds arrive from the other side with the same Venturi effect. Acceleration in the passage can add 20-30% to wind strength.
Transition zone between the Ionian and Aegean seas — both wind regimes (NW Maestro and NE Meltemi) can affect this spot depending on synoptic conditions.
