Palaio Faliro is the most urban kite spot in Athens, located directly on the Saronic Gulf waterfront, just a few kilometers from the city center. This spot benefits from the thermal sea breeze ("Embatis") that develops almost daily in summer from the south/southwest.
Despite its urban character and heavy beach traffic, Palaio Faliro offers flat, protected water in the Saronic Gulf, ideal for beginners and progression. It's the quintessential after-work spot for Athenian kitesurfers.
The spot works from May to September with the S/SSW thermal breeze. Best conditions are between 3 PM and 7 PM when the thermal peaks. Ideal for after-work sessions. Water is ultra-flat in the protected Saronic Gulf. Note: the beach is very busy — respect swimming zones and launch away from bathers.
Flat, protected water of the Saronic Gulf. Fetch very limited by the gulf islands (Salamina, Aegina), ensuring flat conditions even in moderate wind. Sandy and muddy bottom in places, progressive depth. Water is not as crystal-clear as on the islands due to urban proximity, but remains clean. Temperature: 23-27°C in summer.

Parking along the coastal promenade (Poseidonos Avenue) and adjacent streets. Paid parking in the area. Accessible by tram from central Athens (Flisvos stop). Very easy access but parking is difficult during rush hours and summer weekends. The waterfront was renovated for the 2004 Olympics with a beautiful esplanade.
Heavy maritime traffic (ferries, cargo ships, pleasure boats) in the Saronic Gulf. Very many swimmers in summer — regulated sailing zones. Urban noise and visual pollution. With NE wind (Meltemi), conditions are side-offshore — risk of being carried into the gulf. Jet-skis and leisure boats, be very vigilant.
The dominant wind is the thermal sea breeze "Embatis", a S/SSW wind that starts in early afternoon (1-2 PM) and reaches 12-18 knots around 4-6 PM. This thermal is created by the temperature difference between the cool Saronic Gulf and the overheated Athens plain in summer.
On strong Meltemi days, NE wind can also reach the south coast of Athens by wrapping around the Attica mountains. Wind typically drops at sunset. In winter, S/SW winds from depressions are stronger but less regular.
