Skamnioudi is a spot on the south coast of Lesvos, near the entrance to the Gulf of Kalloni. This spot occupies an intermediate position between the sheltered gulf and the open south coast. It benefits from the Meltemi channeled through the gulf from the north, but also from southerly winds when they blow. The variety of possible wind directions makes it a versatile spot for intermediates.
Rideable May to September in Meltemi (channeled from N/NNW), and in spring/autumn in southerly wind. Launch from the beach. Water is choppier than in the gulf, with chop. Riding area along the south coast. No water sports center — spot for autonomous riders.
Semi-open water. In channeled Meltemi from the north, moderate chop. In S/SSW wind, swell and 0.5-1.5m waves possible. Sandy and pebbly bottom. Gradually deepening.
Intermediate
Open all year round
Parking accessible from the south coast roads of Lesvos. Roadside parking. Less touristy area with rural access.
Wind can be irregular at the gulf entrance with direction changes. Currents in the gulf entrance area. Swell in S wind. No lifeguards or rescue. Ride with company. Rocks in places along the coast.
Unique position at the Gulf of Kalloni entrance offering two wind patterns. The Meltemi (N/NNE) is channeled through the gulf and arrives here from N/NNW, blowing onshore to side-onshore. In southerly wind (S/SSW/SW), wind arrives from the open sea to the south, creating onshore conditions with swell. Wind is less consistent than at Sigri or in the gulf, with possible transitions between the two patterns.
