Skala Kallonis sits at the head of the Gulf of Kalloni, a large enclosed gulf in central Lesvos. It's the ideal spot for beginners thanks to flat, shallow water protected from swell by the enclosed gulf. The Meltemi crosses the island through mountain passes and enters the gulf in a channeled flow, offering consistent but moderate wind. The water is lake-flat, warm and shallow — perfect conditions for learning kitesurfing.
Rideable May to September. Wind picks up early afternoon, often a bit later than on the west coast. Launch from the gulf shore, sandy and muddy bottom. Shallow water (you can stand over large areas). Ideal for kite lessons. Water sports centers present in season. Plan for 10-14m² kites (lighter wind than the west coast).
Flat water — enclosed gulf with no waves or swell. This is the spot's main asset. Sandy and muddy bottom, shallow (50cm-1.5m over large areas). Warm water in summer (25-27°C). Flat water conditions ideal for freestyle and learning. The muddy bottom can be unpleasant to walk on.

Parking in Skala Kallonis village. Parking along the waterfront and in public car parks. Paved access from Kalloni and Mytilini. The village has shops, restaurants and accommodation.
Muddy bottom: watch for cuts (shells, debris) and jellyfish. The bottom can be soft and unstable to stand on. No major dangers thanks to the enclosed gulf. Some fishing boats. Turbid water in places. Intense heat in summer — stay well hydrated.
The Gulf of Kalloni channels wind uniquely. The Meltemi (N/NNE) crosses the island through mountain passes and enters the gulf spreading fan-like. At the gulf's head (Skala Kallonis), wind arrives mainly from NW/W/WNW, channeled by the gulf's topography. Wind is typically 5-10 knots weaker than at Sigri (west coast): 10-18 knots in normal conditions. This makes it ideal for beginners and intermediates. The gulf filters gusts, offering smoother wind.
