Sigri is THE reference windsurf and kitesurf spot on Lesvos, located at the island's extreme western tip. This fishing village has become a major sailing destination thanks to the Meltemi that wraps around the island's northwest and arrives in perfect cross-shore on the WSW-facing beaches. The Meltemi is incredibly consistent from June to September, blowing 15-25 knots almost every afternoon. Several beaches allow choosing your conditions. It's one of the best spots in the eastern Aegean.
Rideable May to September, optimal in July-August. The Meltemi picks up around 11 AM and blows all afternoon. Several beaches by level: the main beach south of the village for intermediates, more exposed beaches to the north for advanced. Windsurf and kitesurf centers with gear rental and lessons. Accommodation and restaurants in the village. Plan for 7-12m² kites (9m² all-around size in summer).
Several water areas: the main bay offers manageable chop with Nissiopi islet protection; beaches to the north are more exposed with more swell. Sandy bottom throughout. Warm crystal-clear water (23-25°C in summer). In moderate Meltemi (15-18 knots), excellent freeride water. In strong wind (+22 knots), challenging chop.
Intermediate
Open all year round
Parking in Sigri village and along the beaches. Main car park near the harbor. Paved access from Eressos or Kalloni. Several water sports centers offer gear storage.
In strong Meltemi (+25 knots), advanced conditions with significant chop. Rocks at beach extremities. Conditions can build quickly. Currents possible around Nissiopi islet. Water sports centers provide safety coverage in season. Off-season, ride with company and communication equipment.
The Meltemi (N/NNE Etesian wind) wraps around Lesvos's northwest tip and arrives on the west coast from N/NNW. On Sigri's WSW-facing beaches, this creates perfect cross-shore wind from the right. Consistency is exceptional: in July-August, wind blows 25-28 days per month, 15-25 knots, with peaks to 30+. It picks up around 11 AM and blows until sunset. Nissiopi islet offshore provides partial protection reducing waves while letting wind through. This is one of the most reliable wind patterns in the Mediterranean.
