Katia is a spot on the southeast coast of Lesvos, facing Turkey across the strait. This spot works in southerly and southeasterly winds, when wind blows onshore on this SE-facing coast. It's an alternative to the west coast spots when the Meltemi (N) isn't blowing. WARNING: in Meltemi (N/NNE), the wind is OFFSHORE here and pushes toward Turkey — do not ride in these conditions.
Rideable mainly in spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) when southerly winds are more frequent. In summer, the Meltemi dominates and makes this spot dangerous (offshore). Launch from the beach. The strait offers relatively swell-sheltered water thanks to Turkey's proximity.
Water in the strait between Lesvos and Turkey. Moderate chop, no big waves thanks to the proximity of the Turkish coast limiting the fetch. Sandy and pebbly bottom. Currents in the strait in strong wind.
Intermediate
Open all year round
Parking accessible from the coastal road south of Mytilini. Parking along the road or on dirt spots near the beach.
MAIN DANGER: the Meltemi (N/NNE) creates offshore wind pushing toward Turkey (~10km). NEVER ride in Meltemi! Currents in the strait. Maritime traffic (Lesvos-Turkey ferries). International maritime border to respect. Ride only in southerly wind, with company, and communication equipment.
WARNING: the Meltemi (N/NNE) is OFFSHORE on this southeast coast and pushes directly toward Turkey — riding prohibited in Meltemi! The spot only works in southerly wind: SE (onshore), S/SSE (side-onshore), E/ESE (side-onshore from the left). These winds are more common in spring and autumn. The strait between Lesvos and Turkey channels winds, creating local accelerations.
