Lake Volvi (Kokkalous Beach) is an inland lake spot east of Thessaloniki, the second largest natural lake in Greece. This freshwater lake offers unique conditions with absolute flat water, protected from any swell. The lake, oriented east-west over about 20 km, creates a natural corridor that channels winds. Surrounded by hills, the lake benefits from thermal and channeling effects that generate reliable winds. An atypical spot for Greece, ideal for flat water and foiling.
Launch from the sandy or firm mud shore on the lake's south bank. Sailing on the lake with absolute flat water — no swell or significant chop. The east-west fetch (20 km) can generate light chop in very strong wind along the axis. In Vardaris, the wind is side-shore to side-onshore on the south bank. The lake offers a safe sailing area with accessible banks on all sides.
Absolute flat water — one of the best flat water spots in Greece. Fresh water, clear to slightly murky depending on season. Maximum depth about 20 m in the centre of the lake, shallower near banks. In very strong wind along the lake axis, light chop possible. Ideal conditions for foiling, wingfoiling and freestyle. Pleasant water temperature in summer.
Intermediate
Open all year round
Access from the Thessaloniki-Kavala national road (E2/A2). Kokkalous Beach is accessible via a dirt track leading to the lake's south shore. Parking in natural areas by the lake. Semi-wild area — bring water and provisions.
Few dangers — relatively safe lake spot. In extreme Vardaris, the wind can be very powerful even on a lake. Soft mud areas on some banks — caution at launch and return. Aquatic vegetation possible in places. Natura 2000 protected area — respect environmental regulations. No supervision. Isolated spot.
Lake Volvi is oriented east-west, creating a natural corridor that channels winds along this axis. The Vardaris (N/NNW) descends from the Vardar valley and is deflected by the hills surrounding the lake. East/ENE winds are channeled along the lake axis and can be accelerated by the Venturi effect between the hills. Thermals are reliable in summer, generated by differential heating between the lake water and surrounding land. Hills to the south and north protect from weak lateral winds but reinforce winds along the lake axis.
