Kefalos is the most renowned kitesurfing spot on Kos, located at the southwestern tip of the island in the Dodecanese. This long south-facing bay benefits from the Meltemi wind wrapping around the western point of the island, creating ideal cross-shore to side-onshore conditions. The sandy beach stretches for several hundred meters with turquoise shallow water for the first few meters. The spot works primarily from June to September when the Meltemi blows consistently between 15 and 30 knots. Kefalos has become a major kitesurfing hub in the Aegean Sea with several schools and rental centers on site.
Kefalos bay works with the Meltemi wrapping around the island from the west. Wind arrives cross-shore (NW/W) on this south-facing coast, creating excellent kitesurfing conditions. The riding area extends across the entire bay with enough space for all levels. Beginners stay close to shore in the shallow zone, while advanced riders sail further out where the wind is cleaner and waves form. The spot works from June to September, with the best conditions in July-August.
Turquoise Aegean Sea water, pleasant temperature of 22-26°C in summer (June-September). A 2mm shorty is sufficient in peak season, lycra possible in August. Sandy bottom in the bay with some posidonia seagrass areas. Near shore, shallow water for 20-30m ideal for beginners. Further out, small chop to 0.5-1m waves when the Meltemi is well established. Moderate current carrying eastward along the coast — factor this in for the return.

Free parking along the coastal road that runs along Kefalos bay. Several dirt parking areas accessible directly from the main road connecting Kefalos village to the beach. In high season (July-August), parking can be full — arriving early is recommended. Kite schools often have their own parking spaces reserved for their students.
Meltemi can exceed 30 knots without warning, particularly in July-August — adapt kite size accordingly. Lateral current toward the east along the bay can tire beginners. Some rocky areas at the ends of the bay to avoid. Nautical traffic (fishing boats, jet-skis) in high season — stay alert. Very strong sun exposure in summer — sun protection essential and regular hydration. When the Meltemi is very strong, conditions can become demanding quickly.
The Meltemi (Etesian) wind dominates from June to September, blowing from the north sector over the Aegean Sea. At Kefalos, the wind wraps around the western tip of Kos and arrives cross-shore from the NW/W on this south-facing bay. The Venturi effect between Kos and Kalymnos can strengthen the wind to 20-30 knots in the afternoon. Wind typically picks up around 11am-noon, peaks between 2pm and 6pm, then weakens in the evening. In early and late season, local thermals can supplement the Meltemi. Windless days are rare in midsummer.
