Spot de karpathos | devil s bay

karpathos | devil s bay

karpathos | devil s bay

Overview

Devils Bay is one of the most extreme kitesurfing spots in Europe, located on the east coast of the southern tip of Karpathos in the Dodecanese. This legendary bay is the playground of expert kiters from around the world, drawn by the Meltemi (Etesian wind) that funnels with exceptional power through the channel between Crete and Karpathos. The waves, ultra-powerful wind (often 30-40+ knots) and side-offshore direction make it a spot reserved for very experienced riders.

Spot functioning map

Spot functioning

East-facing wave spot that works exclusively with the N/NNW Meltemi (side-offshore). Wind swell creates 1-3 metre waves in the bay. No protection — full exposure to wind and waves. The spot only works with the summer Meltemi (June-September). In lighter Meltemi, prefer Chicken Bay or Gun Bay.

On the water

Aegean Sea — pleasant temperature in summer (23-26°C), no wetsuit needed from June to September. Wind waves of 1-3m, sometimes more in strong Meltemi. Possible coastal current. Sandy bottom in the bay with some rocks on the sides.

Parking

Access from Afiartis village via a partly unpaved road. Parking on natural ground above the bay. The descent to the beach is on foot with equipment.

Hazards

EXPERT only spot — not for beginners or intermediates. Ultra-powerful side-offshore wind pushing out to sea. 1-3m waves. Risk of drifting towards Turkey in case of equipment failure. Violent and sudden gusts. Rocks on the sides of the bay. Coastal current. Sail with a smaller kite than you think you need. Always have a backup plan. Inform someone before sailing.

Wind specificities

The Meltemi blows here from NNW to N with exceptional power due to the Venturi effect between Crete and Karpathos. This is one of the windiest spots in the entire Mediterranean. Typical strength: 25-40 knots, with gusts beyond 45 knots. The wind is side-offshore on this east-facing coast, making it dangerous — it pushes out to sea. Meltemi season: June to September, peaking in July-August.
