Spot de Gribovo Nafpaktos

Gribovo Nafpaktos

Gribovo Nafpaktos

Overview

Gribovo is a spot near Nafpaktos (Lepanto), on the north shore of the Gulf of Corinth, not far from the famous Rio-Antirrio bridge. The Gulf of Corinth is one of Greece's most powerful wind corridors, and the Nafpaktos area benefits from an exceptional dual wind regime.

From one side, the E/NE wind channeled through the gulf ("Vardaris") arrives cross-shore. From the other, the W/SW wind entering through the Rio-Antirrio strait from the Gulf of Patras arrives more onshore on this south-facing coast. Water is flat thanks to the narrow gulf's limited fetch.

Parking

Parking along the coastal road between Nafpaktos and Antirrio. Nafpaktos is a historic town (Battle of Lepanto 1571) with all services: hotels, restaurants, charming Venetian port. Access via the Rio-Antirrio bridge from the Peloponnese or via the Athens/Delphi road.

Hazards

Powerful and sudden wind thanks to Venturi effect — be prepared. Maritime traffic (ferries, cargo ships crossing the gulf). Currents in the gulf, stronger near the strait. Pebbles on the beach. Rapid depth. Do not venture toward the middle of the gulf.

Wind specificities

Dual wind regime in the Gulf of Corinth: 1) E/NE "Vardaris" wind channeled along the gulf, 12-25 knots in summer. 2) W/SW "Ponentes" wind entering through the Rio-Antirrio strait, often reinforced by the Venturi effect of the bridge passage.

Proximity to the strait creates some of the windiest conditions in the gulf. Thermal amplifies wind in the afternoon. Wind is remarkably steady thanks to the channeling effect of mountains on each side (Peloponnese south, Parnassus north).
