Istro East is a kitesurfing spot on the north coast of eastern Crete, in Mirabello Bay, one of the largest natural bays in the Mediterranean. The north-facing beach receives the Meltemi funneling into the bay.
Mirabello Bay offers some protection from swell while allowing the wind through. An intermediate spot with partially protected water and a magnificent setting.
Spot with no dedicated kite school. Launching from the sand beach. Sailing area within the bay. Works from June to September with the onshore Meltemi.
The bay offers a protected sailing area for intermediates while allowing advanced riders to head further out.
Semi-flat water in the bay with moderate chop. Mirabello Bay's configuration partially protects from open sea swell. Sandy bottom. Progressive depth. Clear warm water in summer (24-26°C).
Intermediate
Open all year round
Parking accessible from the Agios Nikolaos-Ierapetra coastal road. Some spaces along the road. Istro village nearby with tavernas and mini-markets.
Maritime traffic in Mirabello Bay (fishing boats, excursion boats). Moderate current possible in the bay. Possible rocks at beach ends. No permanent supervision.
The Meltemi funnels into Mirabello Bay from N/NNW, creating onshore conditions. Typical strength 12-22 knots, slightly attenuated compared to the open coast thanks to the bay configuration.
Consistent wind in the afternoon from June to September. The bay's wide opening allows the Meltemi to penetrate without much disturbance.
