Kontari Beach is a spot on Chios's south coast, facing the open Aegean Sea. Like other south coasts of eastern Aegean islands, the Meltemi (N/NNE) blows OFFSHORE here, pushing out to sea. The spot only works in southerly wind (SE to SSW), more frequent in spring and autumn. Chios's south coast is wild and isolated, reserved for advanced riders.
Riding only in southerly wind — mainly spring and autumn. In summer, Meltemi dominates and the spot is unusable (offshore). Launch from the beach. Wave conditions in S wind with open fetch. Isolated spot with no facilities — experienced autonomous riders only.
Open all year round
Advanced
Open water facing south. 1-2m swell in sustained S wind. Unlimited southerly fetch. Sandy and rocky bottom in places.
Difficult access by coastal road from south Chios villages. Limited dirt parking. Partially unpaved road.
WARNING: the Meltemi (N/NNE) is OFFSHORE on Chios's south coast — pushes out to sea. NEVER ride in Meltemi! The spot works in southerly wind: SE/SSE (side-onshore from the left), S (onshore), SSW (side-onshore from the right). These winds are associated with depressions and are more common in spring and autumn. When southerly wind blows, it arrives with open fetch creating swell.
MAJOR DANGER: offshore Meltemi pushes out to sea with no land to the south. NEVER ride in northerly wind. Rocky and isolated coast. No rescue. Significant swell in S wind. Coastal currents. Ride with company, VHF and communication equipment.
