Agiokambos is a spot on the east coast of Thessaly, facing the northern Aegean Sea, south of the Tempi valley. Facing east towards the Aegean, this beach offers direct exposure to the Meltemi (N/NE) that dominates in summer. The Thessalian coast here is bordered by the Ossa and Pelion mountains to the west, which create wind acceleration effects when the Meltemi compresses between the terrain and the sea. Exposed spot with open sea conditions.
Launch from the east-facing sand and pebble beach. In Meltemi (NE), the wind is side-onshore — dominant onshore conditions with a lateral component allowing riding. In east wind (direct onshore), more formed wave conditions. The open Aegean fetch is significant — the spot works best in moderate wind. Watch for sea conditions in strong wind.
Open all year round
Intermediate
Moderate to sustained chop, which can become formed swell in strong east/NE wind. The open Aegean fetch (towards the Sporades) allows wave development. In moderate Meltemi, pleasant conditions with manageable chop. Clear Aegean water. Progressive depth from the beach.
Access from the Thessalian coastal road. Village of Agiokambos with some services (tavernas, minimarket). Parking along the road or in areas near the beach. Easy access.
The Meltemi (N/NE) is the dominant summer wind, arriving directly from the Aegean Sea. On this east coast, it arrives onshore to side-onshore, with a NE component. The Ossa mountains to the west create channeling and compression effects that reinforce the Meltemi. East/ESE winds cross directly from the Aegean and arrive onshore with significant fetch. In SE wind, swell can become significant. Reliable afternoon thermals in summer. The Meltemi is particularly powerful and consistent in this northern Aegean zone.
Potentially very powerful Meltemi — assess your skills. Shore break and swell in strong east/NE wind. Current along the coast in sustained wind. Open fetch generates committed sea conditions. Scattered rocks along the shoreline in places. No specific supervision for water sports.
