Ambach is located on the eastern shore of the Starnberger See ("Munich's sea", 25 km south of the Bavarian capital), between Ammerland and St. Heinrich. Active kite spot from April to October, ideal in SW to NW winds which arrive freely on the eastern shore. Flat to choppy water. Calm and natural atmosphere in a protected recreation area.
Bird protection zone: kite allowed only from April to October (north and south lake zones closed November to March). Intermediates only (complex launch near trees).
Access from Ammerland or St. Heinrich. Launch from the beach taking care with the trees at the edge. Easterly wind is offshore — go to Tutzing (west shore) instead. SW wind is the most frequent and most pleasant.
Kite allowed from April to October only. Bird protection zone: November to March kiting prohibited on the north and south shores of the Starnberger See.
Intermediate
SW to NW winds arrive freely on the eastern shore at Ambach. SW sideshore from the left. Easterly or NE wind is offshore — go to Tutzing or Feldafing on the west shore instead. Starnberger See narrower than Ammersee: wind less stable, more gusty. Best seasons: spring and autumn.
Difficult launch near trees — intermediates only. Shallow water near the shore but deep quickly. Bird protection zone: kite forbidden from November to March (inclusive). Easterly winds offshore from Ambach — beware of downwind. Swimmers in summer.
