The Nordstrand of Juist is the main spot on this mythical sandbank island, 17 km long and 500 m wide at most, located between Norderney and Borkum. The island is entirely car-free with no camping, accessible by a 90 min ferry from Norddeich (or by plane). The Kitesurf Island school is located directly at this spot.
Multiple sandbank system 400-600 m from shore: the channels (Priele) between the banks create ideal shallow standing-depth zones for learning. At high tide, waves pass over the sandbanks and can reach logo to mast height in sustained strong W/NW — quality comparable to a pointbreak, rare in the North Sea. Two sectors: the Dorf (main beach, wide channels, moderate breaking waves) and the Loog (faster and higher waves, but more violent whitewater).

Ferry from Norddeich (juist.de for timetables) — 90 min crossing. No cars on the island: transport by foot, bicycle or horse-drawn carriage. W/WNW/NW best (side-onshore from the left). NE and E also possible in summer (more moderate waves). On rising tide, the current pulls to the right (east) — combined with W wind, this makes holding height difficult. On falling tide, the current cancels out with the W wind and conditions improve significantly. In strong wind, mast-high waves on the 3rd sandbank, breaking like isolated pointbreaks — in case of a fall, sufficient depth to stand up, and the shore is always close.
Strong current on rising tide pulling eastwards — combined with W wind, difficult to sail upwind. Violent whitewater at Loogstrand in big swell. Swimming zone (Erholungszone) to be strictly respected — do not kite in marked swimming zones. Mast-high waves possible in sustained strong W/NW. NordSBefV: kite forbidden 3h after sunrise outside the Erholungszone. Seal and bird protection zones — maintain distances.
