Overview

Lake Constance (Bodensee) is the third largest lake in Central Europe, shared between Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Langenargen DLRG is one of the authorised kite zones on the German shore, marked by official signs. Large shallow standing area, main wind from the West and Foehn from the South.

Warning — Mandatory regulations: Kitesurfing is generally prohibited on the Bodensee on the German side. It is only allowed in marked zones with an Ausnahmegenehmigung (special permit), valid for 2 years, issued by the Schifffahrtsamt Bodenseekreis (34 euros, tel. 07541 204-0 / schifffahrtsamt@bodenseekreis.de). Langenargen DLRG kite zone: at the DLRG station, delimited by official marks. Never kite at night or in poor visibility.

Wind specificities

Two main phenomena: the West (depression wind) and the Foehn (warm wind from the South via the Alps through the Rhine valley) — the latter gives the best conditions but can be very gusty and dangerous. The Foehn particularly affects the eastern part of the lake. Easterly wind is offshore at Langenargen DLRG — go to Malerecke or Kurhotel instead.

Hazards

The Bodensee is considered a dangerous inland body of water. The Foehn (warm wind descending from the Alps) can generate waves of 3 m and more, often suddenly. Summer storms can surge abruptly and surprise even experienced riders. Absolutely respect weather alerts and storm signals. Beware of professional fishermen. Maintain 50 m distance from any boat. Give way to all navigation, including sailboats. Kite strictly forbidden outside marked zones — violations can lead to permanent closure of the zone.
