L'Espiguette — THE magic spot. One of the most beautiful beaches in the Occitanie region and one of the best kitesurfing spots in the Mediterranean. Vast expanse of fine sand with an end-of-the-world feel — 10 km long, 600 m wide. Wild beach classified Natura 2000 in the heart of the Camargue Gardoise.
Official spot of Le Grau-du-Roi / Port Camargue, immense space for rigging, launching and landing without risk. Shallow water over a good distance — ideal for beginners and learning. Many schools have made it their teaching spot (Club 30 Kite, Hibiskite, UCPA, Monki).
Rideable in almost all wind directions: NNW to SSE. Tramontane NW reference (best conditions but choppy in strong wind), thermal SW summer reference (consistent and side-onshore from May). Good wind statistics, regular sunshine, mild climate — ideal conditions year-round.
Downwind possible towards La Grande-Motte. Training base of coach Mathieu Girolet (high-level kitefoil).

Natura 2000 classified area.
Access: from Le Grau-du-Roi, Route de l'Espiguette (D255) to the Camping de l'Espiguette sign. Right at the roundabout, 1 km, track on the left before the campsite entrance. Height barrier (vehicles under 2 m).
Large free car park (paid in summer), then 600 m walk through the dunes. Launch area marked by a sign «zone reserved for traction sports».
Wind directions: NNW to SSE (almost all directions except pure E and NE).
Tramontane NW: best conditions — mainly present in winter/early spring. In strong Tramontane: big waves, technical — fall back to Plage Sud.
Thermal SW: from May, picks up around noon, 10-16 knots on sunny anticyclonic days. Consistent, side-onshore.
Marin SE/S: works, waves possible.
Summer: other beaches of Port Camargue and Grande-Motte are restricted or regulated — l'Espiguette absorbs everyone. The number of kites in the sky is impressive but the immensity of the beach allows it.
Schools often access by boat from the town centre or campsite.
Open all year round
Beginner
Large car park (paid in summer, free off-season). Accessible only to vehicles under 2 m height (height barrier).
Then 600 m walk (15-20 min) through the dunes to the beach — few windsurfers because of this trek!
Access: from Montpellier, A709 exit Montpellier Est, D66 direction Les Plages, D62 «Route de la Petite Camargue» towards Le Grau-du-Roi, then follow «Camping/Plage de l'Espiguette».
From Nîmes: A9 exit Gallargues, D979 direction Le Grau-du-Roi / Port Camargue.
Tramontane NW: best sailing conditions — mainly present in winter/early spring. Caution in strong Tramontane: big waves, very technical conditions. For flat water, go to Plage Sud protected by the breakwaters.
Thermal SW: summer reference wind, from May. Picks up around noon, 10-16 knots, consistent, side-onshore. Ideal conditions for all levels.
W: side-onshore, works very well. The stronger the W component, the nicer the waves.
Marin SE/S: onshore, waves possible, slightly choppy conditions. Freeride.
N (Mistral): at the back of the bay, wind arrives side — rideable without risk of drifting offshore.
NE: doesn't work well — too much land. Go to Plage Sud.
E: offshore from l'Espiguette — do not sail.
600 m walk through sand from the car park to the kite zone (15-20 min) — choose your gear carefully before setting off!
In dominant summer SW thermal: beware of wind suddenly turning offshore.
Strong current when the Rhône is in flood.
Large car park accessible only to vehicles under 2 m height (height barrier).
Paid parking in summer.
In summer: supervised swimming zone 500 m along the beach, marked by yellow buoys — do not cross. Sail outside this zone. Lifeguards patrol, ask if in doubt.
In strong NW Tramontane: big waves, very technical conditions. Fall back to Plage Sud for protected flat water.
