Le Gros Jonc is a kitesurf spot on the north coast of the Ile de RĂ©, exposed to the Atlantic Ocean. The beach receives west and northwest winds with good open ocean conditions. Part of the cluster of kite spots near the Phare des Baleines at the northwest tip of the island. Intermediate level with Atlantic swell and tidal awareness required.
Launch from the Gros Jonc beach. Best at low to mid-tide for maximum beach width. West and northwest winds arrive onshore — good reliable conditions. Self-organised spot, no formal zones. Respect bathing areas in summer.
Open all year round
Open year-round. Best season: May to October. The Ile de Ré is a highly popular tourist destination — beaches very busy July-August. Best conditions spring and autumn.
Intermediate
Atlantic beach with moderate swell 0.3 to 1m in westerly conditions. Sandy bottom, significant tidal range. No reef — sandy beach throughout. Tidal current moderate. Good open water downwind run available along the north coast.
West and northwest winds are dominant — they arrive with long Atlantic fetch giving clean and powerful sessions. The north coast of Ile de Ré is more exposed than the south coast. Thermal west wind builds in summer afternoons. The slightly angled coastline means wind is always cross to slightly onshore in westerly conditions.
