Spot de Hossegor La Nord

Hossegor La Nord

Hossegor La Nord

Overview

Hossegor La Nord is the northern kitesurf zone of Hossegor, one of the most famous surf and kitesurf destinations on the Atlantic coast of France. The beach benefits from dominant west and northwest winds, generating powerful Atlantic swell conditions. Hossegor is internationally known for its beach break waves and hosts major surf competitions (WSL Quiksilver Pro). The kite zone is strictly delimited to avoid conflicts with surfers and bathers. A demanding but exhilarating spot for experienced riders.

Technical details of Hossegor La Nord spot

Spot currently open :-)
Spot functioning

The kite zone at Hossegor La Nord is located north of the main surf break. Launch from the beach in a clear zone away from surfers. The spot is self-organised — experienced local riders manage space informally. Respect the surf zones and bather areas at all times. The beach is patrolled by lifeguards in summer who may intervene if kite practice endangers others. Always ride within the designated areas.

Spot opening date

Open all year round

Open year-round. Best season: May to October. In summer, kite practice is only permitted outside the designated bathing zones (marked by blue flags). Strong swell and northwest winds are most consistent from September to May. Summer brings lighter thermal winds from the north.

Required level

Advanced

On the water

Powerful Atlantic beach break with waves of 0.5 to 2m+ depending on swell. Sandy bottom with strong rip currents (baïnes). The swell is generated by Atlantic depressions — conditions can change rapidly. Short-interval powerful waves in west and northwest swells. The ocean bottom is sandy but the force of the waves demands solid body drag management skills.

Parking

Parking at the Estagnots or Nord beach car parks, accessible from the D79. Hossegor town centre has full services (restaurants, shops, accommodation). Busy in summer — arrive early.

Wind specificities

West and northwest winds are dominant, generated by Atlantic depressions. They arrive onshore with good power and consistency. In summer, a thermal north wind develops in the afternoon (12 to 18 knots), more predictable and regular. South wind is possible but very unstable and gusty — expert only. Wind is generally strongest from September to April with Atlantic storm systems.

Hazards

Powerful Atlantic waves with shorebreak — do not underestimate the swell. Strong rip currents. Shared beach with surfers and swimmers — strict separation required. Wind from the south is very unstable and gusty: expert only. Tide-affected spot — check tide tables before each session. Never ride alone.
