Overview

Piantarella is THE iconic kitesurf spot in Corsica, a Caribbean-like turquoise lagoon at the island's extreme southern tip, just 5 minutes from Bonifacio. The setting is absolutely stunning: a sandbank connects the beach to Piana Island, creating a shallow enclosed lagoon where you can stand almost everywhere.

This natural lagoon offers ideal conditions for all levels. Beginners enjoy waist-deep water in a perfectly safe environment, while advanced riders can exit the lagoon for long tacks toward the mythical Lavezzi Islands or into the Strait of Bonifacio, where swells can reach impressive heights.

The spot works mainly with East/Northeast winds (most frequent in summer thanks to thermal winds enhanced by the Corsica-Sardinia venturi effect). Westerly winds also work but are gustier and disrupted by the terrain. The Bonifacio area gets wind every other day to every 3 days in summer.

Note: Kiting is not practical at Piantarella in July-August due to heavy tourist traffic, limited space for kites, and numerous boats anchored in the lagoon. Best visited in shoulder season (April-June, September-October).

Hazards

Limited launch area, especially in summer with tourist crowds. Numerous boats anchored on buoys in the lagoon — watch out while riding. Cohabitation with swimmers, beginner wingfoilers and windsurfers. Some shallow rocks in the lagoon. Offshore, the swell in the Strait of Bonifacio can be very powerful — never go alone toward the Lavezzi Islands.

Wind specificities

The spot is ideal with East winds, which are stable and laminar. With E/SE winds, the water is super flat against the island. Further out, waves roll over the sandbank creating nice kickers for jumping.

Westerly winds are gustier and more technical, disrupted by terrain. Waves can form at the lagoon entrance.

Summer thermal winds are enhanced by the Bonifacio Strait venturi effect (Corsica-Sardinia gap), providing the best wind statistics in all of Corsica.
