Overview

Cap des Séselets is a man-made fin-shaped extension built in 2009 on the southwest shore of Lac du Bourget, in Viviers-du-Lac. It's the main launch spot for North wind, offering an immense 18 km long body of water for epic downwinds and upwind runs.

Spot known for tricky conditions with irregular wind that can drop at any moment. Technical skills, good fitness and weather reading are essential. Not recommended for beginners - always bring swim fins!

Spot functioning

Main launch spot for North wind (N/NNE/NE/NNW). In North wind, you leave from Séselets heading north for 15 km runs along the lake's axis - comparable to l'Almanarre or Serre-Ponçon in distance.

Works mainly with synoptic wind (Bise) which can blow quite strong. Big downwinds possible.

In summer: complex conditions, about 4 days >15 knots in July-August. Some light thermals 8-10 knots in evening or after rain.

On the water

Freshwater lake, immense body of water (18 km long, 2-3 km wide). Launch on grass lawn (artificial finger extending into the water), water entry on pebbles. Side-shore spot in open water.

Aquatic plant beds and reeds along the edges. Progressive depth.

Parking

Small free parking lot with about 30 spaces facing the beach (often full in summer). Secondary parking further south near La Maison des PĂŞcheurs hotel.

Access via D1201 road along the lake south of Aix-les-Bains.

Hazards

Very irregular wind: can drop at any moment, fins mandatory!

Airport proximity: runway 1500m away. Kite flyers have been contacted by control tower - stay vigilant about heights.

If wind dies: NEVER walk back along the road with kite in the air. Pack lines in water and deflate before returning to shore.

Riding mandatory beyond yellow buoys (200m zone). Riding >5 knots and jumps only in open water.

Important cohabitation: swimming, fishing, paddle, snorkeling. Store kites and lines, minimize time with kite in air, immediate launches/landings only.
