Overview

Hayling Island is considered the birthplace of kitesurfing in the UK and one of the most popular spots in the country. Located on the south coast of Hampshire, facing the Solent, it offers varied conditions with a vast foreshore at low tide. The spot works with almost all wind directions, making it a reliable spot all year round. The kite community is very active and several schools are based there.

Spot functioning
The spot changes dramatically with the tide. At low tide, an immense sandbank is exposed offering flat water in shallow lagoons — ideal for beginners. At high tide, the beach is reduced and the water body is choppier. The best conditions are often 2 hours before and after low tide.

On the water
Variable water body depending on the tide: flat water in the lagoons at low tide, short chop at high tide. The bottom is sandy-muddy, with standing depth over large areas at low tide. Fairly murky water typical of the Solent.
Parking
Paid car park by the beach (West Beach car park). Can be very busy on windy weekends. Alternative car parks exist along the west coast of the island.
Wind specificities
The dominant winds are from the southwest (SW), the most frequent and best for the spot. South (S) and west (W) winds also work very well. North winds are offshore but can be used on the inner water body (Chichester Harbour). Summer thermals often strengthen the SW breeze in the afternoon.
Hazards
Strong tidal currents in the Chichester Harbour channel, especially at mid-tide. Do not drift east into the channel. Areas of shallows and shifting sandbanks. Watch out for maritime traffic in the Solent.
