The prevailing south to southwest winds (the "Fremantle Doctor") blow onshore to side-onshore on this west-facing beach with remarkable consistency during summer. Winds typically pick up around noon and blow between 15-25 knots until sunset. The water surface is oceanic with moderate chop and small waves. The spot is suitable for all levels, with calmer areas to the south. Leighton is easily accessible from Perth and Fremantle by train (North Fremantle station).
