Spot de Big Lagoon

Big Lagoon

Big Lagoon

Overview

Big Lagoon is an absolute gem for kitesurfing, located in Francois Peron National Park at Shark Bay in Western Australia. This paradise spot offers a vast expanse of crystal-clear turquoise water, perfectly flat, framed by a spectacular red desert landscape. It is one of the most extraordinary flat water spots in the world, a true dream for any kitesurfer. The lagoon benefits from extremely reliable thermal winds from the south and south-southeast from September to April, blowing regularly between 15 and 35 knots. The water is warm (up to 30°C in summer) and the body of water offers absolutely perfect flat water conditions for freestyle, freeride and downwinders. The ideal season runs from September to April. Access requires a 4WD vehicle as the lagoon is located in the national park on sand tracks. Launching can be tricky with a narrow shoreline cluttered with natural obstacles. It is best to ride at high tide as the water can become too shallow at low tide. A campground is located nearby. National park entry is paid. Nearby spots include Little Lagoon and Denham Lookout, both easily accessible. The Shark Bay region is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is home to dolphins, dugongs, manta rays and sharks (harmless in the lagoon). A kite school operates in the area: Shark Bay Kitesurfing.
