Back Beach at Lancelin is one of the most iconic kitesurf spots in Western Australia and a pilgrimage destination for riders from around the world. Located about 1.5 hours north of Perth on Indian Ocean Drive, Lancelin is famous for its crystal-clear turquoise waters and exceptionally reliable wind conditions. Back Beach offers flat water to light chop conditions, with shallow water perfect for freeride and freestyle. Wind conditions at Lancelin are legendary. The famous "Fremantle Doctor," a thermal sea breeze from the south/southwest, blows almost every day from November to March, typically 20 to 30 knots. The wind is generally offshore in the morning, then shifts cross-onshore from the left around midday. Back Beach is particularly popular with windsurfers and kitesurfers for its turquoise, flat water when swell is low. Lancelin has four main spots, including the lagoon which is the most popular for its ultra-flat water. Back Beach is the ideal alternative with fewer crowds. There are kite schools, equipment rentals and a campground nearby. The village has a few shops, a pub and restaurants. The adjacent white sand dunes also offer excellent sandboarding conditions. Nearby spots to explore include Lancelin Lagoon just next door, as well as Ledge Point further south. Watch out for sea urchins on some rocky areas and the current that can push offshore in strong wind.
