Spot de Cumbuco

Cumbuco

Cumbuco

Overview

Cumbuco is the most popular kitesurfing spot in Brazil and one of the most famous in the world, located 30 km north of Fortaleza in the state of Ceará. This fishing village turned kite mecca offers exceptional conditions: consistent wind of 15 to 30 knots almost every day from June to December thanks to the trade winds, warm water (26-29°C), huge white sand beaches and a very developed kite infrastructure with numerous schools, shops and pousadas. Cumbuco is the starting point for the famous downwinders along the northeastern coast. The atmosphere is festive and international, with a very active kite community year-round.

Technical details of Cumbuco spot

Spot currently open :-)
Spot functioning

The spot works year-round but the main season is June to December. The cross-shore east/southeast wind blows side-onshore on the main beach. At low tide, large flat sand areas are exposed, perfect for launching and landing. At high tide, the shore break can be more pronounced. Several riding areas: the main beach for freeride and freestyle, and lagoons accessible by downwinder for flatwater. Downwinders to Paracuru or Taiba (20-40 km) are a must-do experience.

On the water

Warm water year-round (26-29°C), boardshorts and lycra are sufficient. Varied water conditions: waves of 0.5 to 2 meters on the main beach with a sandy bottom, and flatter areas inside depending on the tide. Wind chop can make the water surface rough in strong wind. Moderate lateral current toward the west (downwind). Excellent conditions for wave riding, freestyle and freeride. The water is turquoise with good visibility.

Parking

Parking available along the village main road or directly on the beach (vehicle access on sand possible in some areas). Most pousadas and kite schools have their own beach access. Attendants offer to watch your car for a small tip. It's advisable not to leave valuables in your vehicle.

Wind specificities

Extremely constant and reliable east to south-easterly trade winds. The main season runs from June to December with daily winds of 18 to 30 knots. Wind typically picks up late morning (10-11am) and blows until sunset, with a peak in the early afternoon. The windiest months are September, October and November. Even in low season (January-May), there is often rideable wind. The wind is cross-shore (coming from the right when facing the sea), creating perfect conditions for riding.

Hazards

Shore break can be powerful at high tide. Lateral current toward the west to monitor. Submerged rocks in some areas of the beach — check locally. Occasional jellyfish (not very dangerous). Very intense tropical sun — sun protection is essential. Possible theft on the beach and in cars — don't leave valuables unattended. Watch out for fishing boats and tourist boats in the riding area.
