Overview

Calvin Bay is on Nootka Island, on the wild west coast of Vancouver Island. Accessible only by boat or floatplane from Gold River. This west-facing spot receives direct Pacific swells. One of BC's most remote and wild spots. Nootka Island is a historic site — first European contact on Canada's west coast (Captain Cook, 1778).

Pacific ocean swell. Powerful waves. Sand and rock bottom. Very cold water (7-12°C). Tidal currents possible. Powerful and unpredictable ocean conditions.

Extremely remote spot — no accessible rescue. Boat/floatplane access only. Powerful Pacific swell. Very cold water (5/4 or drysuit). Bears, cougars and wolves on the island. No cell coverage. Changing weather conditions. Reserved for very experienced and self-sufficient riders.
