Overview

Kitesurf spot at Pointe Picard, on the south shore of Lac Saint-Jean. This large, almost circular lake (45 km diameter) is one of Quebec's largest lakes. Pointe Picard offers access to open water with considerable fetch to the north and west. The lake is known for its relative warmth in summer thanks to its shallow average depth (6m). The blond sand beaches are typical of Lac Saint-Jean. Popular spot for the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean kite community.

Lac Saint-Jean, large freshwater lake. Relatively warm water in summer (20-24°C in July-August) thanks to shallow depth. Excellent fetch to the northwest (30+ km). Chop in sustained wind. Sandy bottom, progressive depth. The lake is shallow (avg. 6m) — short steep waves form quickly in strong wind.

Hazards

Short steep waves forming quickly in strong wind on this shallow lake. Violent thunderstorms possible in summer — the lake is very exposed. The lake is large — do not venture too far from shore. Currents at river mouths. Water can cool rapidly at start and end of season.
